Oh my freakin’ Jeebus, people! I’m so pissed and annoyed and… plain freaked out, it’s not funny.
You know how we on the left always wonder just how crazy the Republicans and Bush-Cheney Corporate Headquarters are? Well, wonder no more!
The stupid is so awesome, so intense, so effin’ ridiculous, so burningly awful that it is almost beyond my ability to respond with more than “Oh my god… but… oh holy shit… sweet baby jeebus in the cow trough!!”
From the New York Times:
Poland and the United States struck a deal Thursday that will strengthen military ties and put an American missile interceptor base in Poland, a plan that has infuriated Moscow and sparked fears in Europe of a new arms race.
”We have crossed the Rubicon,” Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said, referring to U.S. consent to Poland’s demands after more than 18 months of negotiations.
Washington says the planned system, which is not yet operational, is needed to protect the U.S. and Europe from possible attacks by missile-armed ”rogue states” like Iran. The Kremlin, however, feels it is aimed at Russia’s missile force and warns it will worsen tensions.
Um, except Iran is two-three times as far away from Iran as it is from Russia…
but… um… just ignore that.
U.S. officials also said the timing of the deal was not meant to antagonize Russian leaders at a time when relations already are strained over the recent fighting between Russia and Georgia over the South Ossetia region.
“O hai! Sry, dudez. Srsly!
We didn’t mean to piss you off even more, right as you’re cease-firing from a little war spurred on by our idiot government telling the Georgian president we had his back… and then, um, not. But hey! Good news! Condi’s coming to make things all better… um, or maybe to buy shoes.”
[Tusk] said the deal also includes a ”mutual commitment” between the two nations to come to each other’s assistance ”in case of trouble.”
That clause appeared to be a direct reference to Russia, which has threatened to aim its nuclear-armed missiles at Poland — a former Soviet satellite — if it hosts the U.S. site.
Ummm… is anyone else having flashbacks to the 1980s and The Day After ?
Dr. Landowska: There is a rumor that they are evacuating Moscow. There are people even leaving Kansas City because of the missile base. Now I ask you: To where does one go from Kansas City? The Yukon? Tahiti? We are not talking about Hiroshima anymore. Hiroshima was… was peanuts!
Dr. Russell Oakes: What’s going on? Do you have any idea what’s going on in this world?
Dr. Landowska: Yeah. Stupidity… has a habit of getting its way.
Yep, and this misAdministration isn’t going to be happy until the whole freakin’ world is in flames.
Via Shakesville, Reason # 3582668 for Why I Won’t Vote For John McCain.
From a man who cheated on and later divorced the wife who waited through the many years he was a prisoner of war. The mother of the two sons he adopted and the daughter they had together:
Mr. McCain, who with his wife, Cindy, has an adopted daughter, said flatly that he opposed allowing gay couples to adopt. “I think that we’ve proven that both parents are important in the success of a family so, no, I don’t believe in gay adoption,” he said. [New York Times]
Proven? Who’s “proven” this? As a single, straight mom, I call bullshit.
Are gay parents somehow less equipped to give a child a loving home? Are straight parents somehow more equipped?
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.
Hitler didn’t not rise to power by show of force; he was elected. The rights of the German people were not first taken away at the point of a gun, but were eroded by the power of the pen.
With back-room deals and plenty of intimidation, laws contrary to the public good and in violation of the German Constitution were passed by lawmakers whipped to a frenzy by an atmosphere of fear-mongering and hysteria. The Reichstag — the elected representatives of the German people — voted to destroy their Constitution and disband themselves in order that the country be “protected” from “terrorists.”
Those Senators who vote to allow the government to continue spying on the communications of Americans without warrants and to immunize those telecoms which complied with illegal directives by the Executive Branch — to a degree which is still unknown — should be haunted from here on out by the words of some of our Founders and historic figures.
But a Constitution of Government once changed from Freedom, can never be restored. Liberty, once lost, is lost forever.
The debate on the FISA bill begins today, with the vote scheduled for tomorrow. Call your Senators today, and tell them to stand up for the Constitution.
We are asking Senators to vote IN FAVOR of the Dodd-Feingold-Leahy Amendment (S.A. 5064 to H.R. 6304). We’re asking for a NO vote on cloture, and a NO vote on the final bill as well. [my emphasis – Jenn]
Why do we need to oppose this deeply-flawed bill?
Because it is a violation of our Fourth Amendment rights, allowing the government to spy on Americans and their phone calls, emails, and text messages.
Because it legalizes government and corporate law-breaking.
Because it says, “If the President does it, it’s not illegal.”
Because it is a violation of all that we celebrated just four days ago.

Okay, so maybe I lied about taking a break from writing about politics…
Well, no. It’s more a case of “when VastLeft Un-endorses Obama, the cause is so over the top as to require sensible people post about it.”
Admittedly, VastLeft’s support was self described as “tepid” by Lambert but he, like many of us, really believed that pushing the “D” in November — even if we had to hold our noses — was still the smartest, safest thing to do, considering the McCain threat.
So what happened to cause VL to un-endorse? Obama, throwing yet another Democratic principle (and Constitutional mandate) under the bus, wants to expand El Pollo Loco’s Faith-Based Initiatives program (AP) and — this is a big, big problem — and supports their right to hire and fire based on faith.
Yep, you read that right — religious programs receiving federal dollars (our tax money) would be allowed to hire and fire anyone who does not meet their “standard of faith.”
Today’s the day. Montanans and South Dakotans will flock to the polls, vote their choices – with much expectation and extrapolation by the news media – and the primary season will end.
Only the primary season though. Hillary intends to take this to the superdelegates, and all the way to the convention, if need be.
My candle and the teaspoon are at the ready. The fight continues.
Rise, Hillary. Rise.
This one’s for all those Obama supporters out there screaming and ranting that the DNC has to “follow the rules!” and wailing and moaning that Hillary is breaking said rules.
Here’s a snippet of reality from Big Tent Democrat, who lays out the DNC’s actual rules and the consequences:
To recapitulate, a strict interpretation of the DNC Rules that follows the reasoning of the DNC Memo circulated today would require the following results:
A. The stripping of 50% of the delegates of Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Michigan.
B. The full seating of the Florida delegation.
C. Should the DNC RBC reject the safe harbor provision for Florida, then Florida would have 50% of its delegations stripped, but Barack Obama would be entitled to no delegates from Florida due to his violation of Rule 20c.1.b.
The upshot of strictly applying the rules as described above would be:
A. In Iowa, Obama, Clinton and Edwards would lose one half of their delegates. My understanding is that this would result in a net loss for Obama of 6 in his pledged delegate margin over Clinton.B. In New Hampshire, the three candidates would lose one half of their delegates with no net change in the delegate margin between Clinton and Obama.
C. In South Carolina, the three candidates would lose one half of their delegates with a net loss in Obama’s delegate margin of 9.
D. In Michigan, Clinton would gain 37 delegates. In addition there would be 28 uncommitted delegates. A net gain of 37 delegates for Clinton.
E.In Florida, if the entire delegation is seated, Clinton gains 93 delegates Obama 55, and Edwards 13. A net gain of 38 delegates for Clinton.
If instead the safe harbor provision is deemed not to apply, then Clinton gains 47 delegates, Obama 0 (due to his violation of Rule 20) and Edwards 7. A net gain of 47 for Clinton over Obama.
[Bold added for easier reading – Jenn] Read BTD’s entire post, with actual rules.
Now, the question is: Will the DNC apply their actual rules, or will they rig the game?
Tell them this matters. That the rules must apply equally to all candidates. That one candidate followed their rules — despite what her opponent and his vocal, misogynistic supporters say — and will not be pushed out of this race because of their favoritism.
Tell them this race isn’t over, not by a long shot, because Hillary will continue to rise.
You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I’ll rise.
This is not the first time you have seen Hillary Clinton seemingly at her wits end, but she has always risen, always risen, much to the dismay of her adversaries and the delight of her friends.
Hillary Clinton will not give up on you and all she asks of you is that you do not give up on her.
There is a world of difference between being a woman and being an old female. If you’re born a girl, grow up, and live long enough, you can become an old female.
But, to become a woman is a serious matter. A woman takes responsibility for the time she takes up and the space she occupies.
Hillary Clinton is a woman. She has been there and done that and has still risen. She is in this race for the long haul. She intends to make a difference in our country.
She is the prayer of every woman and man who long for fair play, healthy families, good schools, and a balanced economy.
She declares she wants to see more smiles in the families, more courtesies between men and women, more honesty in the marketplace. Hillary Clinton intends to help our country to what it can become.
She means to rise.
She means to help our country rise. Don’t give up on her, ever.
In fact, if you help her to rise, you will rise with her and help her make this country a wonderful, wonderful place where every man and every woman can live freely without sanctimonious piety, without crippling fear.
Another stanza of Dr. Angelou’s poem is equally appropriate to Hillary and the misogynistic hate spewed by the media and the opposition’s supporters during this campaign.
You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I’ll rise.
Rise, Hillary. Rise.
You have got to be fucking kidding me.
At Shakesville today, I learn that irony isn’t just dead, but has been staked, shot, knifed, and garroted.
In case you needed any motivation for Assignment: Teaspoon below, CNN—yes, the same outlet currently running the question “Do you agree with Sen. Hillary Clinton that the press has ignored sexism in the campaign?” without a trace of irony, unless their position is: “No, we’re not ignoring it; we’re fomenting it!”—yesterday featured a panel debating whether calling accomplished attorney and advocate, former First Lady, two-term Senator, and presidential candidate Hillary Clinton a “white bitch” is appropriate.
And there’s video.
Yes indeed. “The most trusted name in news” debates whether or not Hillary is right about sexism, and – to prove she’s wrong about sexism in the media coverage of the campaign – one panelist (a consultant for the GOP, no less) says it’s okay to call Hillary Clinton a bitch, because with “some women … it’s accurate.”
“Has the press ignored sexism in the campaign?”
Oh, no, dearies, you haven’t ignored it. You’ve done a pretty good job of fostering and fomenting it and giving it a platform with which to beat one candidate over the head for having the audacity to run for President while female. Give yourselves a pat on the back.
From this, I think we can see that CNN and Castellanos would approve of a poll asking, “Has the media ignored racism in the campaign?” while a panel debated whether or not it was acceptable to call Senator Obama a “n*gger” because “for some … it’s accurate.” *
– – –
* No, I am not saying it is acceptable, ever, by anyone. What I am saying is that if you substitute racism and a slur against African-Americans, you see how unacceptable “bitch” is.
I am also saying that sexism and misogyny are well-entrenched in the media. So well-entrenched that a man not only called a sitting US Senator a bitch, but claimed it was an “accurate” depiction. As Jeffrey Toobin points out in the video above, the same would not happen with regard to race.
Today will be yet another installment of “I Just Can’t Wait to be King.”
Today’s episode will no doubt feature bunches of misogynistic television anchors, dozens of panting, genuflecting, and possibly fainting bloggers and commentors, and hundreds of troll attacks by people who will either dismiss and disrespect us poor, hysterical women – or else play that favorite concern-troll card, “Can’t We All Just Get Along (since your candidate is obviously hysterical, crazy, psycho, and a girl!)?”
Kentucky/Oregon primary day promises to be full of all the bloviating bullshit we’ve seen in previous episodes.
Watch as Obama is blown away in one state, wins by a narrow margin in yet another, and (possibly) crowns himself the nominee of 46 states – two of which (plus US territory, Puerto Rico) haven’t voted yet, and two of which are being ignored by the precious, presumptuous nominee and the DNC.
I’m ready though. My supplies are laid in, my ISP has been paid finally (^@#%$@ to effin’ ISPs who can’t enter a card number correctly), and I’m mentally-girded for the long, long day ahead.
And for this evening, when the returns come in:
Aspirin to deal with headaches brought on by supposed journalists fawning over the Presumptuous One? Check.
Wine bottle for the drinking games? Check. (And just how many times will a “journalist” tell us it’s all over and tell Hillary Clinton to leave the race now before she destroys the party?)
Pillow to scream into so the neighbors don’t call the police thinking I’m being murdered when all I’m doing is venting my frustration with the so-called Democratic party that is forcing a candidate down our throats while trying to force another out before the convention despite the fact that no contender for the Democratic nomination was ever forced out by the party prior to the convention, no matter how badly they were losing in the delegate count…until now (see also: Jackson, Jesse and Kennedy, Edward)? Check.
Tissues because I’m just an emotional, hormonal, hysterical, angry woman who’ll probably cry again if one more of her heroes leaves his principles behind to jump on the Obandwagon (and yes, John Edwards, I’m talking to you.)? Check.
List of reasons why I should vote for a Democrat even if it’s one I don’t particularly like and think would be as damaging, if not more so, than George W. Bush has been? *sigh* Check.
I have a feeling I’m going to need either strong drink or large bribes to actually pull that lever come November.
