The Lady Speaks

Happy 2008

Another year over
And a new one just begun […]

Let’s hope it’s a good one
Without any fear

It’ll take me two days to break my resolutions, two weeks to recover from the extended holiday complete with relatives who didn’t leave, two months to remember to stop writing 2007 on my checks, but what the hell… it’s finally here.

The last year of the Bush misAdministration – which can only mean more and worse scandals to come, along with the requisite document shredding, destruction of tapes, and weak-tea letters from House and Senate oversight committee chairs ordering documents to be produced and witnesses to appear without actually doing anything if they aren’t or don’t.

This will be the last year of what’s felt like a hundred years of campaigning by Presidential candidates – which can only mean more and worse sliming to come. Expect to hear more from our “news” media about how rich the Edwards’ are, how the Clintons are responsible for everything negative except solar flares, — and Bill’s effect on those is still being studied — Obama’s “Muslim” connections, the Kucinich’s wackiness, etc., etc., etc. And just imagine what the Republican candidates will come up with to smear each other!

With the start of the new year, there’s so much to hope for.

Will this be the year that ends the Iraq war? The year that defines the Democrats as the party of the people, by the people, and for the people? The year that defines the Republicans as the party of fear-mongering racists and theocrats who believe in an America of the rich, by the rich, and for the rich? The year that sees an end to a lawless, corrupt, and defiantly-ignorant executive branch, preferably with indictments in The Hague? The year that sees the majority of the “Fourth Estate” wake up and do its job, as opposed to its seven-year tradition of stenography and fluff pieces?

Will this be the year in which we finally realize, once and for all, that a top-down economy doesn’t work? The year in which Americans begin to care more about who’s running their government and less about mentally-disturbed, over-hyped singers who can’t be bothered with underwear?

Will this be the year in which more Americans stand up and repeat after Howard Beale, “I’m mad as hell, and I’m not going to take it anymore!”? The year we’ll look back upon and think, “That was the year America really got serious about alternative energies and climate crisis, and the year they finally put the stake through the heart of the for-profit health insurance industry?

Who knows?

The best we can do is say a prayer, light a candle, send out positive vibrations, channel white light, wish on a star — or any other method of sending our thoughts to the cosmos — and follow my mom’s advice: Hope for the best; prepare for the worst.

Take it easy, y’all, and I’ll see ya on the flip.
