The Lady Speaks

Democratic Leadership and Other Oxymorons

Oh holy fucking shit.

No wonder.

No wonder neither Reid nor Pelosi has shown enough spine to investigate, why impeachment has been pulled off the table, why they’ve allowed Republicans to continue obstructing and subverting.

They knew we – as in our country – was using torture.

They knew we were torturing suspected terrorists – in 2002.

From the Washington Post:

In September 2002, four members of Congress met in secret for a first look at a unique CIA program designed to wring vital information from reticent terrorism suspects in U.S. custody. For more than an hour, the bipartisan group, which included current House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), was given a virtual tour of the CIA’s overseas detention sites and the harsh techniques interrogators had devised to try to make their prisoners talk.

Among the techniques described, said two officials present, was waterboarding, a practice that years later would be condemned as torture by Democrats and some Republicans on Capitol Hill. But on that day, no objections were raised. Instead, at least two lawmakers in the room asked the CIA to push harder, two U.S. officials said. [my emphasis] [snip]

With one known exception, no formal objections were raised by the lawmakers briefed about the harsh methods during the two years in which waterboarding was employed, from 2002 to 2003, said Democrats and Republicans with direct knowledge of the matter. The lawmakers who held oversight roles during the period included Pelosi and Rep. Jane Harman (D-Calif.) and Sens. Bob Graham (D-Fla.) and John D. Rockefeller IV (D-W.Va.), as well as Rep. Porter J. Goss (R-Fla.) and Sen. Pat Roberts (R-Kan).

Read that list of names: Pelosi, Jane Harmon, Bob Graham, Jay Rockefeller. Jane Harmon was the only one to raise an objection, in a classified letter to the CIA.

But Pelosi, Rockefeller, Graham? Those are Democrats who approved of torture.

Let me repeat that: They approved it.

They had no questions. They made no comments. At least, not until the program was revealed, and then they all jumped to disapprove – if by “disapprove” you mean “made press statements that condemned the practice but then did nothing to ensure it was stopped.”

But, later surges of conscience aside, the fact remains: Democrats approved of torture.

I can only echo what BradRocket said:

Why do I even bother voting for Democrats again? I mean, WTF. It would be nice, really really nice, to have at least one goddamn party in this doomed nation that stands fully against torture. Jesus H., you horrible assholes. Don’t you have any damn principles? Don’t you have any ethics? Have you ever, at any point in your miserable lives, taken a principled stand on any issue?

Again, I feel sick. Favoring torture is now a bipartisan issue. David Broder must be very pleased.

As sick as I feel right now, it also makes me wonder… Why?

Why did they allow bills to pass that gave the Republican President free rein to do what he wanted? [See: Sheldon Whitehouse’s speech on Friday. Video by selise here (Part 1) and here (Part 2)]

Why did they allow bills that condoned torture, stripped out rights, and make the president the defacto king, to pass – with nary a word to the people or the press?

Why didn’t they stand up and say, “Hell, no” when asked to approve the torture of human beings, to strip our Constitutional freedoms, to give the President unlimited power to use as he chose?

In a word: power.

Imagine next year.

One Democrat will be President. I don’t know for sure which one, but it will be a Democrat.

Imagine that Democratic president with all the powers of King George and crew.

Yeah. Let that sink in, Republicans.

One Democrat, probably Hillary, will have all the power King George currently enjoys.

The ability to kidnap and torture anyone suspected of being a terrorist. (And by “terrorist” I mean “brown” and/or “Muslim.”)

The ability to listen in on all Americans’ phone calls. The ability to capture all Americans’ emails. The ability to ignore laws passed by Congress by making signing statements, the ability to ignore her own Executive Orders without notice, without creating a new EO to supersede it. The ability to determine the law is, regardless of the actual laws in place. The ability to tell the Department of Justice – the agency tasked with protecting and defending the laws – that it is bound by the President’s legal determinations.

The power to rape, rob, pillage, and murder, if she so chooses, because the President decides what the law is, and tells the Justice Department what the law is.

Imagine Hillary with all that power. Or Obama. Or Edwards. Or … Kucinich.

This country is fucked.

  2. Agreed, jeff. It honestly doesn’t matter which side you vote for since the same shit comes from both of them. The Republicans just do a better job of enriching themselves.

  3. well my dears now you may understand why i am a green. though i did re register for the primaries , necessary in my state. Good gawd we need a thorough house cleaning. And we certainly need someone other than Hillary. We need real change. Of course the dems are horrific enablers have been for a long time. Its a one business party – this root of the problem must be understood. Lobbiests, the military industrial complex, the seperation of church and state. Things have gotten so corrupt. Eisenhower , Kennedy their words unheeded. We cannot vote many of these problems away. Currently i am reading the shock doctrine by Naomi Klein. Call me old fashioned but i believe once we know what we are really fighting, its origins – we will have more success in fighting it.
Oh the dems do a pretty good job of enriching themselves too, hence all the neo lib economic policies. Its all really quite repugnant – the founding fathers surely are spinning in their graves.
Try not to completely despair dear ones.

  4. I really believe we must hold on for 2008.
It is not so far. We have been this low before, and we Americans have come back. (Nixon thought he could spy on anyone, too.)
I know both Parties play politics. That is what they do. But there are core differences, that an overwhelming majority will be able to capitalize on in 2008.
Right now, the majority is too slim, and the GOP will make sure no Veto is overridden.
I am not bitter, and I will not allow my anger, to make me act in an irrational manner. WE Dems are our own worst enemies.
Any hope for envirionmental improvement, for health care, for the VETS, The Children, and The Elderly, is in guaranteeing an Democratic majority in both the House and Senate, and A Democratic President.
If you want charm, vote Edwards.
If you want sweet nothings whispered in your ears vote, Obama.
If you want a hard-headed, realistic, tough, tenacious, fighter…
Hilary is the one. She doesn’t play like a girl.
She took the military, and Presidential Helicopter, contracts from Boeing, and secured it for Lockheed-Martin in NY…Boeing had that since WW II. She knows how to play with the GOP, or maybe she knows how to Play Them. Either way she gets what she wants. Nobody blinks at the men who do this everyday..They are praised for it.
The people of New York love Hill, and most of them think Rudy, is a Jerk. It will be hers to lose, and she doesn’t like losing.
America, as a rule, is ready to let the girls in theri clubhouses, before the minorities. If that is true, then it will be Hillary.
She is going to be the one to take this, and she knows how to win. Good lord, it will be a nasty battle, but she can fight.
Not because she is a female, but because she is that good.
She was a tough, lawyer. We forget she fought for childrens rights in Arkansas, and was voted among the top 100 Attornies in the USA, while in private practice. She has a lot more than being a Senator, and First Lady going for her. She thinks like a barrister..every words measured, and to the point. Listen..She is saying what she means. Let those that choose think otherwise.
The GOP think she will be the easiest candidate for them to beat.
She wants them to think that. She hopes they think that.
Because then they really might nominate Rudy. (He pulled out of the race against her for the Senate, remember. )
Yes, lets join forces for 2008.
Hillary will have Rudy begging for his MAMA and you can bet the farm on that.

  5. The Dems and the Repubs are the same party when you measure their actions and legislation. They perpetuate the myth that there is a distinction, but it is only to make you feel like you have power. We need competition in government. If it works for grocery stores, auto manufacturers, and clothing, it could work for the political process.
