The Lady Speaks

We Are Doomed

The Kyl-Lieberman amendment to the Defense Authorization Bill passed 76-22.

Why is this bad?

From ThinkProgress:

The legislation accuses Iran of fighting “a proxy war against the Iraqi state and coalition forces in Iraq” and threatens to “combat, contain and [stop]” Iran. The right wing has quickly latched onto the amendment, claiming it “unflinchingly…calls on America to win” against Iran.

(3) that it should be the policy of the United States to combat, contain, and [stop] the violent activities and destabilizing influence inside Iraq of the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran, its foreign facilitators such as Lebanese Hezbollah, and its indigenous Iraqi proxies;

(4) to support the prudent and calibrated use of all instruments of United States national power in Iraq, including diplomatic, economic, intelligence, and military instruments, in support of the policy described in paragraph (3) with respect to the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran and its proxies. [emphasis TP]

Dear sweet gods and goddesses!

Senator Jim Webb called the amendment “Dick Cheney’s fondest pipe dream,” also saying: “At best, it’s a deliberate attempt to divert attention from a failed diplomatic policy,” said Webb. “At worst, it could be read as a backdoor method of gaining Congressional validation for military action, without one hearing and without serious debate.

Why not just pass a “Let’s Bomb Iran and Other Places That Piss Us Off” resolution?

Who were the 29 Democratic senators stupid enough to vote for this?

Shall we start a 50-50 pool now? $5 donation per guess.

On what day will El Chimperor announce to the American people that he’s ordered the US military (any branch) to strike targets in Iran?

Closest to the right date and year wins 50% of the pot. The other 50% will be donated to the United Nations Children’s Fund.

  1. That Senators McCain and Obama chose not to vote indicates that they do not want the public to know where they stand. I have respect, even when I disagree, (which I do) with those that stood up and said Yea/or Nay on this.
Sorry, but both McCain (professed Hawk) and Obama (supposed Dove) keeps slipping in my estimation. They just don’t “Walk their Talk” any more.
We should have heard a loud NAY or YEA from him.
At least, Hilary, is still standing by her decisions…be they good, bad, or misguided.

  2. Barack Obama also chose not to vote on S-Chip…
I wonder what he is willing to stand up for during the campaign.

  3. I did NOT know my senator (Clinton) voted for this. Now I do. Holy Hannah! What are they thinking. Thanks for posting this. Yee gods.

  4. Mom: Good thing she stands by it, not that it helps her one bit with me. I could give her points for standing by her AUMF vote if only because she was fairly quick to say, “All things remaining the same – yes, my vote would be the same.” Whereas everyone else has been busy repudiating their votes based on the information they have today, not what they knew & believed then.

I may not be her most ardent supporter, but I do like that she stands behind her own decisions.

On this vote, however…. *sigh* She should have known better. I feel like we should make up little 3×5 cards for Dems to carry in their pockets at all times: AT NO TIME SHOULD YOU AGREE WITH ANY REPUBLICAN POSITION. EVER. DON’T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT!

Ronnie: I know exactly how you feel. I couldn’t believe Casey voted for it as well. (I knew Specter would because Arlen’s nothing if not a good little Republican soldier.) I just wanted to bash my head off the desk.

  5. Better someone should bash their heads. Altho, I am still happier with the ones who voted…than with all the ones who will no come forth and tell us how they would have voted, if they had voted, but just didn’t vote. If you want my vote, than make your stand official when the bills come up. Talk about Fence sitting…no vote, Barack, is not making me happy.
He can write a good book, but can he sell his message. I don’t think so.
His abstaining from the S-chip vote, sealed the deal for me.
No vote for Obama, from me.
