The Lady Speaks

Refund, Please?

The build-up was intense: T-shirts selling like hotcakes, an already-frenzied media literally foaming at the mouth, debates raging as to the soundness of the move, people feeling pro-royalty for a few minutes…

And then, like a nail into a balloon: POOF!

Britain’s Ministry of Defence announced Prince Harry will not be going to Iraq after all, a move that surprised…absolutely no one.

From AOL News:

Britain’s Prince Harry will not be sent with his unit to Iraq , Britain’s top general said Wednesday, citing specific threats to the third in line to the throne.

Army Chief of Staff Gen. Sir Richard Dannatt said the changing situation on the ground exposed the prince to too much danger.

“There have been a number of specific threats, some reported and some not reported, that relate directly to Prince Harry as an individual,” Dannatt said. “These threats exposed him and those around him to a degree of risk I considered unacceptable.”

  1. Isn’t nice to see that the Elite are alive and well the world over. Their children don’t fight. That’s for the common folk.

  2. Which is why it’s time to require all those who vote for war to fight in that war, or – if age or ill health are a factor – be required to find someone from their own family willing to fight in their place.

If we did things the old-fashioned way, with heads of state leading their armies into battle, you can bet El Pollo Loco would have found a way to keep from invading Iraq. We might have invaded Haiti again, or Iceland, or … well, any country with a tiny or non-existent military, but we wouldn’t be bogged down in the midst of a religious civil war.

  3. The whole Harry-Goes-To-Iraq thing seems like a ruse to me.

  4. Yes, a “Wag the Dog” scenario.
I love “the crazy chicken” line.
Hugo Chavez might be the next target if he isn’t careful, but Iran has been the target of choice in all of the NeoCon writings.

  5. I guess it would have been the right thing for Harry to go.
I for one wouldn’t want a loved one of mine to be hurt or worse in this stupid rich kid’s war, but it would really get me if my loved one were hurt or killed because he was standing too close to Harry. If Harry’s presence over there poses an even greater danger to the average soldier then don’t bother with the charade of sending him.

  6. We must remember that he was willing, and other Royals haved served in time of war. The do not play at the military, it is part of their jobs as servants of Britain. Yes, they are the elite, but they serve in a unique category of public servant. They are literally born into a family where choice is not really available. Harry could become a soldier, sailor, or serve as a clerk in courts, but not much else. They can not enter any profession that might gain them extra privilege or call on them to be counter the view or stand of the family. Princess Dianna and Princess Fergie referred to the Royal Family as The Firm. You served at their pleasure, and it is a lifetime committment.
Harry being 3rd in line to the throne, has chosen the military. Otherwise, he would just be a rich and idle. This is also not acceptable.
Charles now farms as he waits for his mother to relinquish the throne or die, then William gets to do the same.
If you are not the first born, you must find a path acceptable. Charles role was set from birth. Andrew joined the Navy. Edward went for idle, rich.
I commend this young man for making the most of his most limited choices.
In America, we can still be all we work to be. In Britain, the Royals have no choice.
Why do you think the Queen looks so lost, and miserable, so much of the time.
Would it have helped anyone, had Harry gone and was killed, injured, or kidnapped.
Would it have helped G.W. see the error of this war?
Lets recognize his willingness, and commend the commanders that chose, rightly, not to increase the danger to the other troops.

  8. It’s a sensible decision by the Powers That Be ™, and although Harry is no doubt feeling quite disgruntled about the whole affair; at least his company are in a little less danger than they would of been. Of course, they are still IN danger, just not the most targeted company of our troops in Modern Vietnam. Sorry, I meant Iraq.

  9. I’d have to agree….if his being there puts his fellow soldiers in MORE danger (which it would), then he shouldn’t go. Right decision. Now President Shit for Brains, on the other hand, wouldn’t have cared a rat’s ass if it further endangered troops, because amoral, egotistical, narcissistic, psychopath that he is …….he doesn’t care about the troops. Did you hear him today? He said it will be a bloody summer. More American and Iraqi deaths. He says it with such nonchalance. He really doesn’t care.

And hi Pa!! Hope all’s good with you!

  10. Oh, he cares:
He cares that Haliburton and Dick Cheney do well.
He cares that he gets his own way…Mr. My Way or the Highway.
He cares that no matter that is without doubt the worst person to ever become President…he is still The President.
He cares that all his old frat buddies, and all his old professors, and his Reserve commanders, who thought he was a ne’er do well, drunken, blow-hard, have been proven wrong. At least on the Drunken part.. we think.
He cares that he gets to stand up in front of the whole world, and spout his nonsense, and no one can do a thing about it.
He does not care about the Constitution, the Citizens or the USA, or any other nation, he does not care about hunger, poverty, AIDS, war, the economy, or other causes, because they do not directly affect him.
He is a Narcissist, if it isn’t about him or for him, than it is boring.
He doesn’t read. He goes to bed at 9P.M.
He only puts in an 8 hour day. He takes the whole month of August off.
But he is on his way out.
He can go away, and work on the Library in Dallas.
    (You know his Presidents Liberry)
He is a fool…but as he has proven fools are dangerous.
Let us Reason together, and not repeat the mistake of electing another fool.
We must elect the next President by an overwhelming majority…and the Internet can really impact that.
Register…Read…Learn..Comment..Encourage others to Register…And most important Vote in November 2008. The 18 to 25 year olds are underrepersented, as are single women. These groups alone could tip the election.
Time for action. Every vote will matter..
No more jackasses in the white house..except in the annual petting zoo.
