The whole thing reeks of so much hubris I’m dizzy from it! These bastards, Bush and company, are going to do so much damage that recovery will not be possible for years! …reading up on the fate of the Reichstag in 1930s Germany….

You’re probably right (about the consequence of a Dem victory in Nov), but it would be fun to see Bush squirm through impeachment hearings. Hope the flood waters recede in your neck of the woods!

Of course not. They haven’t listened to any authority outside themselves in 5.5 years, so why should anything be different now?

To be honest, even if Democrats win both houses in November, it’ll have no impact on Bush et al. They’ll continue doing whatever they want, even as the Dems hold hearings and whatnot.

Unfortunately, Bush&Pentagon aren’t going to pay any attention. They operate above the law. In yesterday’s NYTimes:

“If they rule against the government, I don’t see how that is going to affect us,” the commander, Rear Adm. Harry B. Harris, said Tuesday evening as he sat in a conference room in his headquarters. “From my perspective, I think the direct impact will be negligible.”

The Defense Department repeated that view on Thursday, asserting that the court’s sweeping ruling against the tribunals did not undermine the government’s argument that it can hold foreign suspects indefinitely and without charge, as “enemy combatants” in its declared war on terror.
